Nvidia DLSS 5 Update Doubles Neural Rendering Performance and Cuts 4K VRAM Usage
Nvidia officially announced that the 3D-guided neural rendering model in DLSS 5 will receive a major performance overhaul this week, with the updated architecture rolling out on October 16.
By systematically optimizing the processing pipeline and refining the underlying neural network, the new version doubles runtime performance compared to the initial September release. Simultaneously, it reduces video memory (VRAM) consumption by 20% in 4K gaming scenarios while maintaining comparable visual fidelity. Compared to the technology’s first technical demonstration in March, cumulative DLSS 5 performance has increased tenfold.
Streamlined Model Architecture Debuts in NBA 2K27
According to Nvidia’s official announcement, this update shrinks the overall model size by 24%, bringing the total parameter count down to approximately 118 million. The refined model debuts first in NBA 2K27 across GeForce RTX 50 series graphics cards, RTX Spark laptops, and the GeForce NOW cloud gaming platform.
Nvidia notes that within NBA 2K27, the updated architecture boosts frame rates by up to 1.4x. Furthermore, all future DLSS 5 titles will integrate this streamlined model by default. As VideoCardz points out, these efficiency gains stem directly from rendering pipeline and neural network optimizations rather than stripping away existing DLSS 5 features.
Expanding Game Support and RTX Remix Integration
Additionally, Nvidia confirmed that DLSS 5 will arrive in Hogwarts Legacy on November 5 for GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs, GeForce NOW, and RTX Spark systems. Developer Avalanche Software utilized the DLSS 5 SDK controls to fine-tune the neural rendering output, preserving the game’s original artistic direction while upgrading its existing DLSS suite to the latest version.
Meanwhile, NetEase’s Where Winds Meet will follow suit with official DLSS 5 support in late November. Although the title already supports DLSS Multi Frame Generation and Super Resolution, the upcoming patch will introduce 3D-guided neural rendering to further elevate environmental and character visuals.
For classic game remasters, Nvidia plans to bring the new DLSS 5 model and a Frame Generation performance mode to RTX Remix on October 23. Designed for RTX PCs, the RTX Remix modding platform enables creators to overhaul legacy titles using full path tracing. Nvidia has already distributed preview builds to select modders for testing. Notably, the company highlighted two community showcases: the Fallout 4 RTX project by Sparkles and Kim2091, which enhances helmet reflections, material details, and shadows, alongside SoftSoundd’s Mirror’s Edge RTX mod, which improves contact shadows, ambient occlusion, and lighting responsiveness.
New Frame Generation Performance Mode in NVIDIA App Beta
Alongside the neural rendering upgrades, Nvidia released a new NVIDIA App beta that introduces a dedicated Frame Generation performance mode for GeForce RTX 40 series GPUs, RTX 50 series cards, and RTX Spark laptops.
Labeled as “Preset C” within the application, this mode replaces the secondary AI model with a lighter, faster algorithm. Consequently, it accelerates standard Frame Generation, DLSS Multi Frame Generation, and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation at the cost of a minor reduction in image quality.
On an RTX 5060 graphics card, enabling Preset C increases frame generation performance by up to 35%. Users can activate the feature in the NVIDIA App beta by navigating to the graphics settings, selecting “Custom” under “DLSS Override – Model Presets,” and choosing “Preset C” from the “Frame Generation” dropdown menu.
