Google Docs and Drive Now Support Markdown Files Natively
Google has given Markdown a proper home. The company has added native Markdown support to both Google Docs and Google Drive, according to 9to5Google.
What Google Docs Markdown Support Does
Google Drive and Docs can now open, edit and use files in the .md format directly. Users simply click a file to see it fully rendered.
The rendered view includes clickable links and structured tables. In addition, users can edit the file in real time and leave comments on it.
A Shared Language for People and AI Agents
Google says the feature lets AI agents collaborate on documents. It can even sync with Gemini Notebook. As a result, human writers and AI tools can work on the same file.
Google employee Chandu Thota called Markdown the “universal language between humans and AI agents.” That phrase captures the thinking behind the update.
Rollout Timing
The rollout began on October 5. However, some users may wait up to 15 days before the change appears in their accounts.
