Microsoft has refined the Copilot experience within Word, introducing a citation feature designed to help users trace the origins of AI-generated answers and keep the notorious problem of hallucination in check. According to Windows Central, which reported the change on October 5, the update gives Copilot in Word its long-awaited sources, a safeguard that generative AI has sorely needed.

Under the new arrangement, Copilot’s replies now arrive accompanied by source links. With a single click, users can leap directly to the original web page or internal document, where they may verify the context and accuracy of what the assistant has told them. Microsoft says the move heightens transparency and helps people understand precisely where Copilot’s information comes from.

The need is plain. AI tools frequently stumble into erroneous conclusions, whether through outdated training data or a misreading of context, and they sometimes conjure sources that appear authentic yet do not exist. The industry has come to call this phenomenon “hallucination.” The citation feature lets users retrace a response to its original material and confirm whether Copilot has extracted and interpreted the information correctly.

Microsoft has also polished the design and functionality of Copilot Chat, and has strengthened the Copilot App with plugins, connectors and Work IQ enhancements. Beyond Word, Copilot in PowerPoint gains new skills and connectors as well, extending the push toward a more dependable AI assistant across the Microsoft 365 suite.
