Apple Cuts iPhone 18 Pro Component Orders Amid Weak Demand
According to a recent report by Nikkei Asia, soaring memory chip prices have forced Apple to increase retail costs. Specifically, the company raised the prices of its newly launched iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Consequently, consumer market demand has noticeably weakened. As a result, the technology giant has instructed specific suppliers to scale back component production.
Strategic Shipping Adjustments
Multiple insiders indicated that Apple has adopted a highly cautious approach to shipping schedules since early September. Two reliable sources noted that demand for the new handsets fell short of initial expectations. Therefore, Apple slashed its October component orders by at least 15% compared to original projections.
An executive-level insider provided further context regarding this sudden shift. The executive revealed, “For October alone, Apple reduced component orders for these two premium models by 15% to 20%.” Furthermore, they added that predicting future developments remains exceedingly difficult.
Supply Chain Repercussions
Because individual suppliers operate on varying production cycles, the October adjustments will not affect everyone uniformly. Instead, the cuts will impact only a specific subset of the broader manufacturing network. Currently, no definitive information confirms whether Apple intends to implement additional reductions starting in November.
Another knowledgeable source explained that overall order volume from late August through October has lagged behind previous years. However, this discrepancy might stem directly from strategic adjustments to the iPhone release cadence. Apple consciously chose to prioritize the launch of three premium models this autumn. Meanwhile, the company delayed the standard iPhone 18 and the next-generation iPhone Air until next spring.
Shift in Release Strategies
A prominent supply chain manager corroborated this shifting timeline. The manager stated, “We have indeed observed that demand beginning in August falls short of historical norms.” This drop occurred primarily because all new models traditionally debuted simultaneously in the past.
The standard iPhone 18 typically drives significant shipment volumes across the global market. However, assembly partners will not require components for this device until late this year. They are currently preparing for an official market release in early 2027.
Premium Pricing Challenges
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max carry starting prices of $1,199 and $1,299, respectively. Both represent a notable $100 increase over their direct predecessors. These premium devices officially hit retail store shelves on September 18.
Meanwhile, Apple’s inaugural foldable device, the iPhone Duo, commands a staggering starting price of $1,999. The company plans to release this ambitious handset across 70 countries beginning October 23.
Another insider candidly addressed the pricing strategy. The source admitted, “As a smartphone, it is simply exorbitantly expensive.” Considering the sluggish performance of the Pro models, analysts anticipate that the iPhone Duo will confront similar challenges.
