Linux Mint 27 “Adrien” Arrives Christmas 2026 With Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Base

The Linux Mint project officially announced the codename, version numbering, and target launch window for its next major operating system release. Scheduled to debut as Linux Mint 27 “Adrien,” the upcoming distribution brings an overhauled versioning scheme alongside numerous built-in software additions.

New Versioning Strategy and Codename Shift

Notably, the development team opted to jump directly to version 27 rather than releasing Linux Mint 23 as previously anticipated. Furthermore, because Linux Mint 22.3 “Zena” concluded the alphabetical cycle of female codenames, the developers are restarting the alphabet using male names. Consequently, the upcoming flagship release carries the codename “Adrien.”

In another major shift for the distribution’s development cycle, the team is retiring traditional point releases entirely. Following Linux Mint 27, subsequent updates will increment directly to Linux Mint 28, Linux Mint 29, and beyond. As expected, Linux Mint 27 “Adrien” builds upon the Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Resolute Raccoon) foundation and ships with Linux kernel 7.0 by default.

Target Release Window and Desktop Editions

Developers plan to launch the final stable build of Linux Mint 27 during Christmas 2026. Consistent with previous generations, the distribution will offer dedicated editions featuring the Cinnamon, Xfce, and MATE desktop environments. Although the team has not yet locked in a specific release date, a public beta build will arrive for community testing within the coming weeks.

New Applications and System Enhancements

Linux Mint 27 introduces a substantial wave of native software tools and desktop refinements. Specifically, users can look forward to three new default applications: the Xepub e-book reader, the Clockenstein calendar utility, and the Clocks alarm manager. Additionally, the update delivers enhanced Wayland compatibility for the Cinnamon desktop, a redesigned Thingy (Library) document manager, and an upgraded System Administration utility featuring integrated kernel management.

Clement Lefebvre, leader of the Linux Mint project, emphasized the unprecedented scale of this upcoming release. “I have worked on Linux Mint for more than 20 years now,” Lefebvre stated. “I do not think I have ever seen so many changes and new features implemented for a single release. It is really exciting, and it scares me a little bit because that also means we will be very busy during the beta phase.”
