Google researchers recently published a research paper revealing an extraordinary achievement. They utilized four Gemini 4 Argon agents to successfully conquer Minecraft. Astonishingly, these intelligent entities defeated the Ender Dragon in merely 27 hours. According to Engadget, these Google Gemini 4 agents beat Minecraft with zero human intervention.
Autonomous AI Conquers Minecraft
The Google team placed the four Gemini 4 models into a randomly generated world. The agents could coordinate seamlessly using the in-game chat interface. However, the researchers provided absolutely no predefined strategies. They merely stated the ultimate objective. Consequently, the agents planned every single action autonomously. Researchers observed their progress through a dashboard. They retained the ability to pause or terminate the test. Yet, they possessed no power to intervene directly.
Strategic Task Delegation
Once the game commenced, these intelligent agents quickly divided their responsibilities. Some constructed Enderman farms efficiently. Others focused entirely on gathering essential food supplies. Meanwhile, the rest dedicated themselves to profound exploration. They actively shared combat techniques with one another. Furthermore, they dutifully retrieved lost equipment whenever a teammate perished.
The Cost of Virtual Victory
Throughout this entire virtual campaign, the four agents transmitted 229 messages. They executed 2,783 specific programs and died a staggering 605 times. They spent 13.5 hours just reaching the End dimension. Then, they devoted all remaining time to defeating the formidable Ender Dragon. This massive undertaking consumed 1.35 billion input tokens. Based on standard consumer rates, this computational effort cost approximately $1,620.
The research team expressed immense pride in this milestone. “To the best of our knowledge, this marks the very first time AI agents have completed Minecraft entirely autonomously from start to finish,” they stated. “The entire process utilized solely the standard Mineflayer library. We employed no specific map seeds and provided absolutely no human assistance.”
