Apple Formally Retires the Final 12-inch MacBook Model

According to a recent report published by AppleInsider on October 14, Apple has updated its official Vintage and Obsolete Products list. Notably, the company officially marked the final 2017 model of the 12-inch MacBook as “obsolete.”

Understanding Apple’s Hardware Support Lifecycle

Based on Apple’s official definitions, a product receives the “vintage” designation when the company stopped distributing it between five and seven years ago. During this specific transition period, Apple still offers official repair services. However, they cannot guarantee the availability of replacement parts, as repairs depend entirely on local store inventory. Consequently, once a service center exhausts its spare parts, customers can no longer pursue repairs through official Apple channels.

The Legacy of the 12-inch MacBook

The revolutionary 12-inch MacBook initially debuted in 2015. It quickly amassed a devoted following thanks to its incredibly sleek, fanless design and avant-garde aesthetic. Initially, many industry observers viewed this ultra-portable device as the natural successor to the iconic MacBook Air.

Nevertheless, the device suffered from several frustrating limitations. It struggled with underwhelming processing performance and featured only a single connectivity port. Due to these constraints, it ultimately failed to achieve widespread mainstream adoption. Following the release of the 2017 model, Apple quietly discontinued the beloved product line entirely.

Additional Devices Joining the Obsolete List

Alongside this remarkably thin and light laptop, Apple added several other notable devices to the obsolete registry on the same day. These newly retired products include:

* The sixth-generation iPad (both Wi-Fi and Cellular connectivity models)
* Various vibrant color editions of the BeatsX wireless Bluetooth headphones. This includes specific variations such as Defiant Black-Red, Matte Black, Satin Silver, and Blue.
