Developer Adds PS2 Disc Support to PS5SX2 Emulator

Developer Sword recently announced a significant update to the PS5SX2 emulator, officially releasing version 2.01 with exciting new capabilities. This specialized software functions as a dedicated PS2 emulator crafted explicitly for modified PS5 consoles. Impressively, the program allows users to run classic games at up to six times their original resolution. The latest update finally introduces long-awaited support for physical game discs.

Understanding the Disc Reading Process

When the PS5SX2 emulator detects an inserted PS2 game disc, it initiates a specific workflow. First, the software copies the game data directly from the optical media to the console’s internal hard drive. Subsequently, it launches the game from these copied files. Therefore, the system does not boot the game directly from the physical disc itself.

Furthermore, users must navigate a hardware limitation regarding the PS5 optical drive. The built-in drive can only read Blu-ray and DVD formats. Consequently, PS2 titles originally distributed on CD media remain currently incompatible with the internal optical drive.

Expanding Accessibility with External Drives

Shortly after this initial release, the developer deployed the v2.02 update for the PS5SX2 emulator. This version introduces an intriguing experimental feature. Specifically, it permits users to connect external USB DVD or Blu-ray drives to read physical PS2 discs.

This brilliant addition proves particularly beneficial for owners of the digital-only PS5 edition. Looking toward the future, developer Sword also confirmed ambitious upcoming plans. He explicitly expressed his intention to integrate physical PS3 disc reading support into the upcoming PS5 port of the RPCS3 emulator.
