Mercedes EQS Now Offers Optional Steer-by-Wire

Mercedes-Benz has announced a bold step forward for its flagship electric sedan. The new-generation EQS now supports an optional steer-by-wire system, as ArenaEV reports.

What the New Package Includes

The option bundles three key elements. First comes the steer-by-wire system itself. Next is a rear-axle steering system. Finally, a flat steering wheel arrives with an innovative airbag structure built into it.

In Germany, the package costs 2,500 euros before tax. With tax included, the price rises to 2,975 euros.

Easier Driving and Parking

Steer-by-wire brings many advantages to everyday driving. The technology sharpens the dynamic character of the car. It also makes handling and parking noticeably easier.

The steering needs only 170 degrees of rotation from lock to lock. As a result, the car steers with a smooth, effortless grace. Furthermore, the system works with the rear-axle steering to filter out vibrations from rough roads. Those shocks no longer travel to the driver’s hands.

More Space Inside the Cabin

The more compact steering wheel also transforms the interior. It frees up valuable space in front of the driver. In addition, it improves the view of the driver display. Getting in and out of the car becomes easier as well.

A Redundant Safety Design

Mercedes-Benz built the system on a redundant architecture. It uses high-precision sensors, a powerful control unit and independent signal paths. Together, these parts keep the system dependable.

Even a complete system failure is covered. In that rare case, the ESP system keeps lateral control of the car. It does so through rear-axle steering and braking applied to specific wheels.
