Specifically, authorities announced the launch of the DAWO initiative, as municipalities explore an autonomous digital work environment. This ambitious program considers transitioning away from the Microsoft Windows operating system toward robust open-source alternatives.
The Rise of Homegrown OS Solutions
Currently, this comprehensive migration strategy remains in its preliminary stages. Eight local municipalities plan to initiate pilot programs to phase out Windows entirely. Consequently, the Netherlands is rolling out an alternative NixOS-based software ecosystem. Officials previously evaluated platforms like openSUSE and Fedora. Interestingly, Dutch programmer Eelco Dolstra originally developed NixOS, and its foundational headquarters proudly reside within the Netherlands.
Expanding the European Digital Portfolio
Furthermore, Dutch officials actively seek additional European digital office alternatives to diversify their infrastructure. These potential software candidates include France’s La Suite and Germany’s openDesk platforms. By evaluating these localized options, the government aims to establish a highly secure and independent digital workspace.
