App Store Group Purchases: A New Way to Share Subscriptions

Apple recently announced via its developer portal that the App Store will introduce a new “Group Purchases” feature for regular users this winter. This addition enables a single user to acquire multiple subscription seats simultaneously. Consequently, they can invite family members, colleagues, or team members to share the same application subscription.

Expanding the Subscriber Base

According to the official announcement, developers can explore two distinct methods to expand their subscriber base through multi-seat purchasing. First, group purchasing permits individual subscribers to buy multiple seats and invite others directly from the application. Furthermore, volume purchasing facilitates bulk acquisitions through Apple Business and Apple School Manager. This approach presents subscriptions to enterprise and educational clients who procure applications on a large scale.

Enterprise and Educational Rollout

Volume purchasing for enterprise and educational institutions officially launched on October 22. Organizations can now buy subscription seats in bulk. Subsequently, they can assign, increase, or decrease seats using standard device management tools.

Meanwhile, group purchasing for the general public is slated for a winter release. Developers can begin configuring and testing this feature within the sandbox environment starting October 28.

How Group Purchasing Differs

Unlike the existing Family Sharing feature, group purchasing functions more like a collaborative membership. For instance, a small team can collectively fund subscription seats for note-taking, design, or fitness utilities. After the initiator completes the payment, they invite members to join. Importantly, each member continues to log in using their personal Apple account. This distinct separation simplifies both management and departure processes.

Developer Controls and Future Outlook

For developers, Apple has enabled multi-seat purchasing capabilities by default within App Store Connect. However, creators retain the autonomy to disable this function. Alternatively, they can individually control its availability across the App Store, Apple Business, and Apple School Manager.

At present, Apple has not disclosed a specific launch date or minimum seat requirements. Furthermore, the company has not confirmed whether mandatory discounts will apply. Nevertheless, examining the product logic suggests that group subscriptions could fundamentally alter how users acquire application services.
