A Dramatic Reduction in Punctuation Usage

On September 26, @arena published an insightful post on the X platform detailing extensive writing metric evaluations. The rigorous testing revealed that Anthropic drastically altered how its latest artificial intelligence model formats text. When directly compared to the Opus 5 model, the new Claude Opus 5.5 writing metrics demonstrate a staggering 95 percent decrease in em-dash utilization. Specifically, the frequency plummeted from 15.2 instances per thousand words down to a mere 0.8.

Analyzing High-Reasoning Responses

The esteemed Arena team meticulously analyzed high-reasoning text responses generated throughout August and September 2026. Their comprehensive results revealed that ten out of twelve distinct writing metrics shifted toward what Arena categorizes as definitive improvements.

The most glaring transformation involves the aforementioned reduction in em-dashes. Previously, Claude Opus 5 relied heavily on this punctuation mark, deploying 15.2 em-dashes per thousand words. The Opus 5.5 upgrade slashed this usage to 0.8, marking an astonishing 95 percent decline from its predecessor.

Shorter Sentences and Fewer Semicolons

Simultaneously, the model exhibited a massive drop in semicolon usage. The previous Opus 5 iteration generated 6.10 semicolons per thousand words. However, Opus 5.5 reduced this frequency to just 1.64. This massive 73 percent reduction clearly indicates that the model now actively avoids easily identifiable, robotic punctuation patterns.

Furthermore, the average sentence length experienced a notable shift. Opus 5.5 currently averages 10.03 words per sentence, whereas Opus 5 averaged 12.14 words. These comparative statistics decisively prove that the newer model crafts fewer excessively long sentences, ultimately delivering significantly more concise phrasing.

Increased Overall Word Count

Interestingly, despite utilizing shorter sentences, the total word count of the model output actually increased. Opus 5 traditionally delivered an average response length of 453 words. In contrast, Opus 5.5 expanded its average output to 481 words. Consequently, this remarkable enhancement makes it the Opus model with the longest average writing length in this comparative study.
