Giorgia Meloni Seeks Voice Trademark to Combat AI Deepfakes

According to Reuters, public archives reveal that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has formally petitioned the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). She seeks to register her distinct voice as a legal trademark to fortify her defenses against malicious artificial intelligence deepfake content. As noted in recent geopolitical developments, Italy PM Meloni seeks an EU trademark for her voice amid AI deepfake risks.

An Unprecedented Intellectual Property Submission

The official application, dated October 5 on the EUIPO portal, has received formal confirmation from Meloni’s cabinet. This unprecedented submission features a brief, four-second audio recording wherein she authoritatively declares twice in Italian, “I am Giorgia Meloni.”

The phrase “Io sono Giorgia” notably serves as the title of her 2021 autobiography. This iconic declaration originated during a passionate political rally in 2019 and subsequently inspired a viral dance track remix.

The Proliferation of Malicious Fabrications

In recent years, heavily manipulated imagery of the Prime Minister has proliferated across digital platforms, with numerous individuals inadvertently circulating the fabricated content as authentic truth. One particularly egregious forged photograph depicted her sitting on a bed clad merely in lingerie.

Meloni has vehemently condemned these malicious fabrications. She asserts that their primary objective is to disseminate insidious disinformation and orchestrate targeted personal attacks. Furthermore, she implored netizens to rigorously verify the authenticity of online media prior to sharing. She poignantly observed that while she possesses the requisite resources to safeguard her personal rights, countless ordinary citizens remain devastatingly vulnerable to such digital exploitation.

Legal Barriers and Ongoing Litigation

Currently, the trademark application submitted to the European regulatory body remains under meticulous review. Italian media outlets report that even if authorities ultimately approve the voice trademark, this singular intellectual property right cannot completely eradicate the unauthorized creation of artificial intelligence audio clones. Nevertheless, it will undoubtedly erect formidable legal barriers against counterfeiters attempting to replicate her distinct vocal timbre.

Previously, in 2024, Meloni initiated a civil lawsuit against a Sardinian individual. She accused him of illicitly superimposing her facial features to generate and maliciously publish deepfake pornographic material online. This specific litigation currently remains active within the Italian judicial system.
