Nvidia and Cisco Unveil Advanced USFP Optics
Pioneering High-Speed Connectivity
Nvidia and Cisco recently announced their collaborative launch of the USFP specification. This remarkable achievement marks a major industry milestone. Specifically, it introduces the very first pluggable optical module designed to support high-speed 400Gbps per lane signaling.
Scaling for Future Demands
The new USFP maintains physical dimensions comparable to existing OSFP optical modules. The initial wave of these products masterfully integrates 16 full-duplex channels. Furthermore, engineers can easily scale this robust architecture. Future iterations will seamlessly support 32 or more channels. Ultimately, this expansion will achieve an astonishing data throughput of 12.8 Tb/s.
Superior Bandwidth and Efficiency
The bandwidth capacity of the USFP optical module represents a massive leap forward. It reaches four times the capacity of current 200G per lane pluggable alternatives. Meanwhile, advanced 400G SerDes technology heavily bolsters this new hardware. Consequently, the USFP delivers 1.3 times the energy efficiency of its older predecessors.
Innovative Mechanical Design
This advanced hardware utilizes a novel two-dimensional array connector. Its unique two-step insertion design offers several crucial operational benefits. It deliberately delays the engagement of high-speed electrical contacts until after the user fully seats the module. Consequently, this brilliant mechanical mechanism minimizes harmful contact wear over time.
Furthermore, this thoughtful approach dramatically enhances overall signal integrity. It also makes the physical insertion force highly predictable for technicians. Finally, the new module safely supports a generous 100W power envelope. This impressive power capacity significantly simplifies modern network switch design.
