Spotify Removes 50 Million AI Spam Songs

Spotify announced on Tuesday that it has purged more than 50 million songs from user recommendation feeds over the past year. These tracks were specifically identified as low-quality AI-generated spam or artificial streaming filler. Concurrently, the company recalibrated its recommendation algorithms to prioritize musical compositions crafted by authentic human creators.

Enforcing Stricter Platform Rules

Spotify stated, “The platform’s editorial team enforces identical standards.” This policy ensures that tracks deemed inferior AI spam or artificial filler are never integrated into recommendation feeds. The company added, “Following these strategic adjustments, listener complaints regarding such content have diminished significantly.”

The Introduction of AI Personas

Notably, Spotify does not mandate compulsory labeling for all AI-generated tracks. However, the streaming service introduced an “AI Persona” designation. This label applies to creators employing virtual artificial intelligence identities rather than existing as real individuals. Furthermore, the platform refuses to recommend music generated by these artificial personas.

Industry Trends in AI Music Moderation

Other music streaming platforms have adopted considerably stricter policies regarding artificial intelligence music. YouTube Music actively appends labels to AI-generated songs. Deezer permits users to independently filter out substandard AI music. Meanwhile, Bandcamp explicitly enforces a comprehensive ban on the publication of AI-generated music.

Advanced Detection and Future Collaborations

The streaming giant noted that it comprehensively analyzes multiple data points. These metrics include user listening behaviors, upload characteristics, metadata, and third-party AI detection tools. This thorough analysis helps determine whether a track constitutes low-quality, AI-generated spam. Last year, the corporation disclosed the elimination of over 75 million spam songs.

Currently, Spotify is actively collaborating with Universal Music Group and the independent music distributor Believe. Together, they aim to launch a sophisticated tool designed for producing AI-assisted music remixes.
