LG Electronics Lands 5GW Deal to Expand AI Data Center Cooling
LG Electronics has taken a bold step into the race for AI data center cooling. On Monday, the company announced that its North American subsidiary had signed a long-term supply agreement with AIR Control Concepts, a specialist in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning services.
The deal covers advanced chillers for AI data centers, known as AIDC facilities. Notably, its total scale exceeds 5GW. As a result, it ranks among the most ambitious cooling contracts in the region so far.
Who Is AIR Control Concepts?
AIR Control Concepts manages hyperscale infrastructure projects across the major data center hubs of North America. Moreover, its main clients are some of the world’s leading data center operators.
For LG, this partnership opens a direct path to the largest buyers in the market. In other words, the company now has a trusted channel into the facilities that power modern AI workloads.
Why AI Data Center Cooling Matters
AI computing generates enormous heat. Every new rack of accelerators pushes power density higher. Consequently, operators need cooling systems that are both powerful and efficient.
The long-term contract will speed up LG’s push into the global market for AI data center cooling. At the same time, it meets the growing demand for efficient thermal solutions across computing infrastructure. You can read more in the official LG announcement on its North American supply agreement.
Inside LG’s AIDC Chiller Technology
LG’s AIDC chillers combine two key ideas. First, they use a centrifugal, air-cooled design. Second, they add refrigerant-based free cooling technology.
How Free Cooling Works
Free cooling takes advantage of cold outdoor air. When temperatures drop, the system lets that air carry away heat. Therefore, the compressor does not need to work as hard.
This approach lowers the cooling load on the compressor. In turn, it cuts overall energy use and running costs.
Energy Savings at a Glance
LG has shared figures from its own internal simulations. According to those results, refrigerant free cooling can save about 30% more energy each year than water-cooled technology.
For large operators, that gap is significant. After all, cooling often accounts for a major share of a data center’s power bill.
What This Means for LG
This agreement signals a clear strategic shift. LG is best known for consumer electronics and home appliances. Now, however, it is positioning itself as a serious supplier for AI infrastructure.
In short, the 5GW deal gives LG a strong foothold in North America. It also shows how quickly the AI boom is reshaping demand for cooling hardware.
