Reflection AI Launches Open-Weight Model Beam

Nvidia-backed startup Reflection AI launched its first open-weight AI model named Beam on Monday. The ambitious company aims to challenge popular Chinese AI models like DeepSeek and Kimi. Specifically, they focus heavily on advanced code writing and autonomous agent tasks. In fact, Reflection debuted Beam to rival Chinese models at a lower compute cost.

Impressive Performance and Architecture

Reflection AI claims Beam rivals Z.ai’s GLM-5.2 in overall performance. Furthermore, its coding and agent capabilities rapidly approach Qwen3.8-Max. The startup revealed that Beam contains 501 billion total parameters. These variables dictate how the artificial intelligence processes complex information.

However, the model utilizes a highly efficient sparse activation architecture. Therefore, it activates only 23 billion parameters for each specific task. This clever design enables much faster inference speeds. Additionally, it significantly reduces ongoing operational costs. In contrast, GLM-5.2 possesses approximately 744 billion total parameters and activates roughly 40 billion parameters.

Rising American Competition

American technology firms constantly battle fierce competition from Chinese open-weight models. These foreign alternatives offer lower costs and massive customizability. Moreover, their code generation skills rival top models from OpenAI and Anthropic.

Former DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou founded Reflection AI in 2024. The company primarily develops automated software development tools. Currently, this niche represents a rapidly growing application for modern artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, Reflection AI secured a major partnership with SpaceX. Consequently, they gained vital access to extra computing power at Elon Musk’s Colossus 2 data center.
