Critical VMware Vulnerabilities Demand Immediate Action

Cyber security professionals have discovered five vulnerabilities within VMware products. Two of these flaws received a critical severity score of 9.8 out of 10. One vulnerability allows attackers to bypass authentication mechanisms in the virtual machine management system. The second critical flaw enables unauthorized actors to execute arbitrary code. Broadcom released necessary patches earlier this summer. However, this threat has proven significantly more severe than initial assessments suggested.

The Scope of the VMware Threat

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security issued a stern warning on July 30. They highlighted severe dangers facing VMware vCenter, ESX, Workstation, and Fusion. Furthermore, this alert covered Cloud Foundation, vSphere Foundation, and telecommunications carrier solutions. This advisory directly followed an official Broadcom security bulletin published on July 29. These vulnerabilities compromise various distinct components. Consequently, the ultimate consequences depend heavily upon the specific product and the attacker’s existing privileges.

The most catastrophic errors reside within vCenter. Administrators utilize this central platform to govern their entire virtual infrastructure. The vulnerability tracked as CVE-2026-59309 allows hackers to circumvent the VMware Directory Service authentication entirely. Therefore, criminals can gain complete unauthorized access. Meanwhile, CVE-2026-59310 involves a directory traversal flaw within the Syslog server. This specific weakness opens a direct pathway to remote code execution. Shockingly, both attacks merely require basic network access to the vCenter server.

Virtual Machine Escape Risks

Another critical problem carries a severity rating of 9.3 out of 10. This flaw, designated as CVE-2026-47876, impacts the VMXNET3 virtual network adapter within ESX. A rogue administrator inside a guest virtual machine can exploit an out-of-bounds memory write error. Subsequently, they can execute malicious code directly on the physical host server. To accomplish this dangerous virtual machine escape, the attacker first needs local administrative rights within the guest operating system.

Additionally, CVE-2026-41703 earned a severity score of up to 7.6. This issue relates to reading memory beyond permissible boundaries. In an ESX environment, an attacker with virtual machine deployment rights can easily trigger data leaks. They might also cause the servicing process to crash entirely. In Workstation and Fusion, the consequences remain limited to minor information disclosure. Thus, the danger rating for those specific platforms drops to 2.7.

Logging Bypasses and Ransomware Attacks

The fifth error, tracked as CVE-2026-41709, specifically affects ESX event logs. A malicious administrator can perform specific destructive operations that will completely evade system logs. Such a weakness severely complicates post-incident investigations. Fortunately, it does not inherently grant an outsider administrative access to the server itself.

Broadcom quickly released critical fixes for vCenter versions 8.0 U3k, 9.0.2.0100, and 9.1.0.0300. They also provided ESX updates for all currently supported branches. Users must immediately upgrade Workstation and Fusion to version 26H1. The official bulletin lists the exact required versions for all other associated products. The manufacturer did not provide any temporary workarounds to replace installing the actual patches.

This alarming story developed further in September. The American CISA agency confirmed that active ransomware operators are now exploiting CVE-2026-59310. Ultimately, we are no longer discussing a merely theoretical hacking possibility. Companies utilizing vCenter must immediately audit their installed builds. You must close this vulnerability immediately rather than relying on perimeter network restrictions alone.
