iPhone 18 Pro Charging Speeds Match AVS With Standard Adapters

Recent testing by LTT Labs reveals intriguing charging data for the Apple iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. These premium devices achieve exceptional fast-charging speeds without requiring Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS). Specifically, standard USB PD chargers deliver performance nearly identical to AVS-compatible adapters.

AVS is an advanced USB Power Delivery charging protocol feature. It empowers chargers to finely adjust output voltages across a broad spectrum. This adjustment directly responds to requests from the connected device. Meanwhile, USB PD stands for USB Power Delivery. This system represents the prevailing fast-charging standard for USB-C interfaces. Devices and chargers actively negotiate optimal voltage and current levels. Consequently, this communication safely maximizes overall charging power.

Official Fast Charging Claims

Apple previously released an official statement regarding these charging capabilities. The iPhone 18 Pro reaches a 50% charge in merely 15 minutes. Additionally, wireless charging achieves that same 50% milestone within 30 minutes. Furthermore, the iPhone 18 Pro Max provides approximately seven hours of video playback. You only need a brief five-minute wired charge to gain this impressive playback time.

Apple conducted these comprehensive tests in July 2026. Engineers utilized pre-production iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models. They paired these smartphones with USB-C cables and an Apple 40W dynamic power adapter. This specific adapter, model A3351, technically supports up to 60W. Wired fast charging mandates a 60W-capable USB-C cable. It also requires a USB PD 3.1 power adapter supporting AVS. The company performed these rapid charging tests on fully depleted iPhone units. Timing officially commenced the moment the Apple logo appeared during startup.

Understanding Real-World Variables

However, actual charging durations vary based on adapters, settings, and environmental factors. Therefore, everyday user results may differ slightly from controlled laboratory metrics. Users must pair 60W or higher power adapters with standard USB-C cables. Conversely, 35W or higher power adapters require MagSafe chargers. Apple thoughtfully sells all these accessories separately.

Comparative Performance Testing

To investigate further, researchers tested the iPhone 18 Pro charging performance comprehensively. They compared the AVS-supported Apple 40W dynamic power adapter against the UGREEN Nexode 140W charger. The UGREEN device conspicuously lacks dedicated AVS support. Researchers meticulously recorded output power and total time required for a full charge.

For the iPhone 18 Pro, both chargers demonstrated nearly identical output power curves. Moreover, the total time required to reach a full charge remained exactly the same. Consequently, the organization concluded that AVS is absolutely not necessary for high-speed charging.

Pro Max Exhibits Minor Disparities

The iPhone 18 Pro Max test results exhibited a marginal disparity. Using the Apple adapter, initial charging output reached approximately 50W. This official configuration completed a full charge in exactly 82 minutes. Meanwhile, the UGREEN charger never quite reached the 50W output threshold. As a result, it required 84 minutes to fully replenish the battery.

Ultimately, LTT Labs summarized their definitive findings. A standard USB PD charger delivering 40W to 50W suffices perfectly. Even without AVS capabilities, the iPhone 18 Pro series charges incredibly fast. Indeed, these standard speeds basically match those of specialized AVS chargers.
