Microsoft X Account Hijacked in Elaborate Crypto Scam

The Initial Breach

On October 3, technology publication Windows Latest reported that hackers compromised the official Microsoft X account. This prominent profile boasts over 13.07 million followers. Consequently, the perpetrators published a fraudulent tweet claiming, “If this gets 500,000 likes, we will bring Clippy back.”

Microsoft spokesperson Brent Colburn addressed the alarming situation immediately. He confirmed that unauthorized individuals had breached their official server account. Furthermore, these malicious actors distributed numerous unauthorized posts under the company banner. Currently, security teams have fully secured the compromised profile. Moreover, they successfully eradicated the fraudulent posts and continue to investigate the breach thoroughly.

The Cryptocurrency Deception

Following the initial hijacking, the attackers deliberately followed a suspicious themed profile named @clippymsftcto. Subsequently, this dubious account displayed an image of the iconic digital assistant standing against the classic Windows XP background. It provocatively asked how many likes were required to orchestrate a triumphant return.

However, this orchestrated campaign never genuinely aimed to resurrect the beloved mascot. Instead, it served as a deceptive front to actively promote the $Clippy cryptocurrency. Indeed, hackers hijacked Microsoft’s X account to promote a Clippy cryptocurrency. Afterward, the hijacked corporate profile maliciously quote-tweeted this original message. It deceitfully reiterated the promise of returning the assistant for 500,000 likes. Therefore, it successfully fabricated a convincing illusion of a genuine corporate announcement.

Resolution and Corporate Response

Additionally, the perpetrators temporarily altered the official avatar to feature the classic paperclip character. This clever visual manipulation significantly amplified the overall deception. Ultimately, this chaotic digital occupation lasted for approximately thirty minutes.

Finally, the corporation issued a brief apology statement before swiftly deleting it. The company emphatically clarified that it absolutely neither supports nor authorizes any digital tokens. Consequently, executives promised to pursue aggressive legal action to permanently eliminate this infringing material.
