Canonical Announces Ubuntu 27.04 Tenacious T-Rex Schedule

Canonical has officially christened its forthcoming major operating system update as Ubuntu 27.04 “Tenacious T-Rex.” Furthermore, the company established a concrete release roadmap, setting the official launch date for April 22, 2027.

Understanding the Interim Release Cycle

Ubuntu 27.04 will serve as Canonical’s 46th operating system release. As an interim build, it will receive software and security maintenance for a duration of nine months, concluding in January 2028. Consequently, this version specifically caters to bleeding-edge enthusiasts who willingly sacrifice the rock-solid stability of an LTS release to experience the newest technological advancements.

The six-month development cycle for Ubuntu 27.04 commences later this month on October 22, 2026. Developers will base this initial toolchain upload upon the upcoming Ubuntu 26.10 “Stonking Stingray” release scheduled for October 15, 2026. According to the official release schedule documentation, the public beta testing phase will commence on March 29, 2027, paving the way for the stable launch on April 22, 2027.

Key Milestones and Freeze Dates

The development timeline incorporates several vital developmental milestones:

  • Ubuntu Testing Weeks: Two optional testing periods on December 24, 2026, and March 4, 2027.
  • Feature Freeze: Scheduled for February 25, 2027.
  • Kernel Freeze: Set for March 25, 2027.
  • Final Freeze: Slated for April 15, 2027.

Additionally, Ubuntu 27.04 anticipates integrating the upcoming GNOME 52 desktop environment, which debuts on March 17, 2027. Regarding the underlying kernel, Canonical will likely harness the power of Linux 7.6, aligning with its tradition of adopting the freshest kernel iterations. As the community awaits the arrival of Ubuntu 26.10, developers will soon inaugurate the earliest daily builds for Tenacious T-Rex. Technical insights remain sparse for now, though Canonical may disclose further details during the upcoming Ubuntu Summit.
