YouTube Music Introduces Transparency Labels for AI-Generated Songs

To enhance transparency regarding artificial intelligence in musical works, YouTube published an official announcement on October 14 unveiling a dedicated AI music labeling system. Initially launching on YouTube Music, these new YouTube Music AI labels will soon expand directly to the main YouTube application.

How the New AI Music Tags Appear to Listeners

According to the company, the platform will flag tracks identified as primarily created with generative AI. Specifically, this applies when creators use AI models to generate melodies, arrangements, or synthetic vocals. On affected tracks, a prominent oval-shaped “AI” badge will appear directly beneath the song title, positioned right next to the artist or channel name.

Consequently, listeners can immediately spot the disclosure while streaming their favorite playlists. Furthermore, tapping the AI badge opens a detailed informational menu. This pop-up explains precisely how artificial intelligence contributed to the track, giving audiences clear context about the audio they are hearing.

Three Disclosure Categories for Creators

Behind the scenes, the labeling framework combines voluntary disclosures from music partners with YouTube’s proprietary AI detection tools. When delivering music metadata to the platform, creators and labels must select from three distinct classifications:

  • Fully Gen AI: Tracks generated entirely through text prompts, or songs where generative AI models produced all lyrics, compositions, instrumental performances, and vocals.
  • Partly Gen AI: Works featuring authentic human recordings or live performances where creators used AI to assist with background chords, specific melody lines, lyric brainstorming, or sound effects.
  • No Gen AI: Standard, traditional music production. Notably, tracks utilizing pitch-correction software like Auto-Tune or automated mastering tools still fall under this non-AI category.

Finally, the platform does not rely solely on self-reporting. If an uploader fails to declare AI usage during submission, YouTube’s internal detection systems will analyze technical audio signals to automatically identify and label the content.
